Imvelo Responsible Tourism Awards - Winners announced on World Responsible Tourism Day

The winners in the 2011 Imvelo Responsible Tourism Awards programme were announced today. The programme is organised by the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (FEDHASA) in association with the National Department of Tourism and is supported by Absa, the Department of Water Affairs, Eskom, the Industrial Development Corporation and Don't Waste Services.

"People from across the different sectors of the meetings and events (and hospitality) industry have been following separate, if similar, steps on the journey toward sustainable business practices. This has led to different practices and results, all of which encourage continued action and innovation, but may not be the most effective approach in terms of moving the industry to adopt standards that all of us accept and adhere to when planning an event or meeting", says Paul Salinger, president elect of the global Green Meetings Industry Council.

Mashovhela Lodge in the Soutpansberg Mountains of the Limpopo Province in South Africa has been selected as a finalist in this year's Imvelo Awards. Out of 209 category entries received only 23 businesses were selected as finalists.
UNWTO advances partnership approach for monitoring sustainability

The Global Observatory on Sustainable Tourism (GOST), a UNWTO initiative for the monitoring and evaluating of sustainable tourism policies, received a significant boost following the signing of a Collaboration Agreement between UNWTO and Sun Yet-Sen University in Guangzhou, China. Strengthening cooperation between the two partners, the agreement represents an important step towards the responsible planning and management of tourism destinations.
